Collapsed manholes are today a common occurrence on most of the UK's highways.

These frequently require repair on an annual basis, not only costing the country's limited road maintenance budget vast sums of money, but also causing traffic congestion, increased pollution, delays and losses to commerce.

The increased volume and weight of traffic, together with the increased efficiency of truck braking and turning, have dramatically increased the stresses imposed on road ironwork.

Recent research has shown that traditional materials such as bricks, tiles and mortar used to support and adjust ironwork cannot cope with these loads and stresses.

An additional problem occurs during resurfacing as the ironwork not only poses an obstacle for the planing operation, but should the road have to be trafficked while planed off, the raised ironwork becomes a hazard and may result in accidents or damage.

A patented support structure, designed to provide durable cost effective manhole construction and maintenance, comprising precast concrete elements and specially formulated bedding and locking compounds.

The structure contains ironwork both vertically and laterally allowing the ironwork cover and frame to be lowered or raised within the system to accommodate future road planing and resurfacing works.

During trials over 200 units were installed on some of the most heavily trafficked highways, these have been monitored by the water company, local authority, highway engineers and WRc.

Following 18 months of independent testing and site trials ReadyRaise has gained WRc approval (No. PT/66/0199) and is now regularly being specified by many consultants and Local Authorities. The System has also gained British Board of Agreement HAPAS approval (No00/H041).

Thousands of units have now been installed throughout the UK.
